Polar bear spotted in northern Newfoundland

ST. ANTHONY, N.L. – The RCMP in northwestern Newfoundland are warning residents in the St. Anthony area to watch for a wayward polar bear.

Police say the bear was last seen in the Balsam Drive area of St. Anthony, which is near the northern tip of the island’s Northern Peninsula.

Officers with the province’s Natural Resources Department have been dispatched to the area.

Polar bears are known to frequent northern parts of Newfoundland in the spring as they follow seals heading south on ice floes pulled along by the Labrador current.
