QUINTE WEST, Ont. – Provincial police are looking for a driver who struck an officer and led police on a chase through rush-hour traffic before the vehicle was found abandoned on the highway.

OPP say officers from their Quinte West detachment, near Belleville, responded to reports of a dangerous driver at 5:25 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police say they found the suspect vehicle soon after, but as officers got out of their cruiser, it sped away and struck one officer. The officer was later treated for minor leg injuries.

They say the fleeing suspect vehicle was able to evade police due to poor road conditions and heavy traffic.

Police were able to locate the car – identified as a black Pontiac G5 with Ontario plates BYYJ 064 – soon after on the eastbound shoulder of Highway 401 just west of Napanee.
