Vernon courthouse in need of a makeover

Demand is growing for a Vernon landmark to get a makeover.
The Vernon courthouse was built in 1914 and local lawyers are concerned the building lacks adequate space to keep up with current demands.
Another concern is that the courthouse does not have modern security measures.
The issues were raised to Justice Minister Shirley Bond when she was in Vernon Tuesday.
Bond took a tour of the courthouse and said afterwards that the government plans to upgrade the facility.
“What we need to look at is capacity issues and security and where it might fit in the government’s capital plan,” Bond said. “It certainly is in our capital planning horizon within the next decade.”
Bond also noted that one option is to restrict the current building to civil matters and to build a new courthouse to deal with criminal cases.
