Investigators say explosion, fire in Village of Bath was arson

Officials investigating an explosion and house fire in Bath on Tuesday say they believe it to have been caused by an act of arson.

Neighbours say they heard a loud explosion at about 4 a.m. Tuesday at a Somerset Avenue home, and reported seeing suspicious activity just prior to the incident.

“Once we collected enough information that I was able to establish that we were looking at an incendiary explosion the scene was criminalized,” Ontario Fire Marshal investigator, William Hay said.

Fire investigators say the home is a write-off and will need to be demolished once the investigation is complete.

“The Ontario Provincial Police have taken the lead on the investigation and we’re working in conjunction with them,” Hay said.
