Remembrance Day 2017 ceremonies in the Edmonton area

Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held across the country this Saturday as Canadians from coast to coast come together to remember and honour those who have served their country.

There are several ceremonies being held in and around Edmonton on Nov. 11. If you aren’t able to make it out to a ceremony in person, you can watch the ceremony from the Butterdome in the comfort of your own home.

Global News will live stream the ceremony from the Butterdome online, starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The service will also be shown on television from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Here is a list of the Remembrance Day ceremonies happening in and around Edmonton this Saturday.

Edmonton City Hall

Mayor Don Iveson will be on hand for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at City Hall. The service will be held in the City Room. People can arrive as early as 9:45 a.m. And must be seated by 10:10 a.m. for the 10:15 a.m. ceremony.

After the service, there will be an outdoor procession to the City Hall cenotaph, where wreaths will be laid. The service should wrap up by about 11:30 a.m.

Parking is free at the City Hall, Century Place and Stanley Milner Library parkades on Remembrance Day.

University of Alberta Butterdome

The annual ceremony at the Butterdome is being held from 10 a.m. to noon at the University of Alberta Van Vliet Centre. People attending this service are asked to be seated before 10 a.m.

Mayor Don Iveson and Lt.-Gov. Lois Mitchell will be in attendance.

Global News will live stream this ceremony online from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It will also be broadcast live on Global Edmonton. The service will be hosted by 630 CHED Afternoon News host J’lyn Nye.

Shaw Conference Centre

Members of the Sir Winston Churchill Unit #3, Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada will host a commemorative ceremony at the Shaw Conference Centre Peace Plaza.

The event starts with a parade at 10:30 a.m., followed by a service at 10:45 a.m. It will include the laying of wreaths, two minutes of silence and the national anthem.

West Edmonton Mall

Jasper Place Branch #255 of the Royal Canadian Legion will holds its annual Remembrance Day service at the Ice Palace in West Edmonton Mall. The service starts at 10 a.m. A moment of silence will be held at 11 a.m.

Beverly Memorial Cenotaph

A church service will be held at Maranatha Christian Reformed Church at 9:30 a.m. followed by a parade to the Beverly Cenotaph at 10:20 a.m. The Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph will start at 10:50 a.m.

Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum

The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum, located in the Prince of Wales Armouries Heritage Centre, will hold a remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. with a traditional minute of silence at 11 a.m.

St. Albert

The Remembrance Day ceremony at the St. Albert Cenotaph starts at 10:30 a.m. with a parade. The service begins at 11 a.m., followed by an open house at the St. Albert Legion at noon.

Sherwood Park

Millennium Place will host a Remembrance Day service from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Leduc

A Remembrance Day service will start at 9:15 a.m. at the Leduc Recreation Centre. People are asked to be seated by 9 a.m.

Spruce Grove

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 281, in partnership with the City of Spruce Grove, will host a Remembrance Day service at the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre. The doors open at 9:30 a.m. People are asked to be seated by 10:15 a.m.
