Safety concerns around windows in the Brookfield Place office tower in downtown Calgary have once again closed streets in the city’s bustling core.
Citing engineers’ concerns over the structural integrity of the building’s glass, Calgary police said the sidewalks on the north and east sides of Brookfield Place were closed just after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Traffic lanes on 6 Avenue S.W. from 1 Street to 2 Street were reduced, as the curbside lanes of those streets were closed.
Additionally, the right-hand lanes on 1 Street S.W. from 7 Avenue to 6 avenue were closed as of 6 p.m. and the road will become a two-way traffic setup.
The city said it’s working closely with Brookfield Place, adding the building’s owners are taking extra precautions including planned installation of protective coating on adjacent windows, which the city said couldn’t be done on Tuesday because of high winds.
Several streets surrounding Brookfield Place were closed on Sunday and into Monday after glass from a broken window fell onto the street below.
Closures were also enforced along Stephen Avenue on Oct. 15 after glass reportedly fell from TD Square during high winds.
