Yarmouth County man dead following attempted boating rescue

A 67-year-old Yarmouth County man is dead after his boat capsized late Friday afternoon.

Yarmouth District RCMP said they received a 911 call at 4:26 p.m. about a man in distress who had been pulled out of the water at the end of William Allen Road in Melbourne.

According to a preliminary investigation, the man was trying to help passengers in another stranded boat when his own boat began having mechanical problems.

He was taken to Yarmouth Regional Hospital by Emergency Health Services (EHS) and later pronounced dead.

RCMP say the original boaters were rescued by members of the Lake Vaughn Volunteer Fire Department.

The investigation is ongoing.
