No link yet between missing women, remains found on Salmon Arm-area farm: RCMP

Remains found on north Okanagan property add to mystery of RCMP investigation – Oct 25, 2017

It’s too soon to connect a string of missing women in the north Okanagan to a farm on Salmon River Road in the Salmon Arm area where human remains were discovered earlier this week, the RCMP said Wednesday.

At least five women have gone missing along the stretch between Vernon and Sicamous in the last 20 months.

But speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said none have yet been connected to the property.

“Until these remains have been positively identified, it’s too early in the investigation to say whether their discovery is linked or not to any ongoing missing persons’ investigations. We therefore caution everyone with respect around speculation and speculating.”

“The investigation is quite fluid, we have no timeline in regards to when we’ll be finished with the search,” or on when the remains that were discovered on Saturday would be identified, said Moskaluk.

Earlier this week, police said they couldn’t be sure the remains belonged to one person.

Mounties have now brought in additional resources, given the large size of the 24-acre property, Moskaluk said.

Earlier on Wednesday, investigators delivered more heavy equipment and a second command post to the farm, which has now been the subject of an extensive search for a week.

At least two large tents have been erected on the same property, and police have been investigating at least three locations, including one three kilometres away on Salmon River Road.

Police had issued a warning related to Salmon River Road last Friday, after a woman was allegedly threatened with a firearm earlier this year.

Earlier this week, searchers were also combing the area of Springbend Road and Highway 97B.

One of the property’s residents, 36-year-old Curtis Wayne Segmoen, is in custody after being arrested on six charges stemming from alleged gun threats made to a sex trade worker in August.

Police won’t say whether he’s a suspect in the investigation into the remains.

He is to appear in court in Vernon on Thursday.
