The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has determined a house fire in the community of Taradale on Monday was sparked due to the improper disposal of smoking materials.
The fire broke out at a home in the 100 block of Tarington Green N.E. at around 5:30 a.m.
Two adults and two children were at home when the fire started and were alerted to the blaze by their neighbours.
“A quick reaction by them, next door, to get them out of the house and let them know the backside of the house was on fire,” Brad Bogner with the Calgary Fire Department said.

One of the neighbours who alerted the family to the fire was assessed on scene by paramedics for possible smoke inhalation, but didn’t require treatment.
The CFD said the house sustained “significant fire and smoke damage.” Most of the damage was contained to the back of the home, but a neighbouring home also suffered damage.
The family did have working smoke alarms, but as the fire started on the exterior of the home, the smoke alarms only activated once fire had breached the windows from the outside.
“Residential fires that start on the outside of homes are extremely dangerous, especially if not detected early,” the CFD said in a news release. “Occupants have only mere seconds to get out once an exterior fire grows and makes its way inside the house.”
The residents are receiving assistance from CEMA (Calgary Emergency Management Agency) and the Red Cross.
In total, approximately 22 firefighters from two different fire halls responded to the call.
