The children were out of surgery and recovering well, Toronto police said Saturday evening.

Witness Helen Bohn, a resident of the apartment building, told Global News that she was coming out of the lobby when the boy, who had an open head wound, approached her and asked her to call 911.

“It hurt me. I wanted to faint seeing that,” Bohn said.

Another witness said she saw the two children covered in blood and barely able to speak.

“They had nothing to say, they were in shock,” Linda Dipiero said.
