Man and woman charged after rifles, overcapacity magazines seized at New Brunswick-U.S. border

A 56-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman face multiple charges after two semi-automatic rifles and prohibited overcapacity magazines were seized from a vehicle at the Woodstock border crossing in New Brunswick.

According to an RCMP press release, the pair arrived at the Woodstock port of entry on the evening of Oct. 4, when Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers referred them for a secondary inspection.

The officers discovered the weapons and overcapacity magazines which resulted in both the driver and passenger being arrested.

The Mounties were contacted and the pair was transferred into police custody.

David Allen Polchies and Sharon Ann Weeks, both of Teed Mills, N.B., appeared in Woodstock Provincial Court on Oct. 5.

They have both been charged with importing restricted firearms under the Criminal Code while the CBSA has laid Customs Act charges for non-report, untrue statements and smuggling.

Both were remanded into custody until a bail hearing on October 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Woodstock Provincial Court.

On Oct. 5, the RCMP executed a search warrant at a home on Teed Mills in relation to the seizure. A number of firearms and ammunition were seized along with a large quantity of cash.

The Mounties say their investigation is ongoing.
