Toronto man dead, 1 still missing after canoe capsizes in Kawartha Lakes

A young man from Toronto has died and another is missing after a canoe carrying four men capsized in Kawartha Lakes early Sunday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police said emergency personnel responded to the scene on Sturgeon Lake at around 2:35 a.m.

Police said at around 5:25 p.m. one victim was recovered, deceased from the water.

Earlier in the day, police reported one occupant was able to swim to shore, while another was rescued from the water by officers using a civilian boat.

None of the occupants were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

The OPP’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) are on scene.

The search will continue Sunday until dusk and will resume again in the morning if needed for the one occupant still missing.
