While Wonder Woman took 2017’s summer box office by storm, earning critical raves and more than $800 million worldwide, famed director James Cameron went on record critcizing the movie, remarking in an August interview with The Guardian that Gal Gadot’s superhero was “an objectified icon” and an example of “a step backwards” when it came to feminism.

Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter speaks at United Nations
One person who takes umbrage with Cameron’s remarks is O.G. Wonder Woman Lynda Carter, who played the bullet-deflecting heroine in the hit 1970s TV series.
Carter took aim at the Avatar director in a Facebook post, telling Cameron to “STOP dissing WW,” and accusing him of not understanding the character.
“I most certainly do,” writes Carter. “Like all women — we are more than the sum of our parts. Your thuggish jabs at a brilliant director, Patty Jenkins, are ill advised. This movie was spot on. Gal Gadot was great.”

Carter concludes by stating: “I know, Mr. Cameron — because I have embodied this character for more than 40 years. So — STOP IT.”
