It’s a good time to be a teacher in London. As the first month of the school year winds down, both public and Catholic school boards are ramping up recruitment efforts.

The London District Catholic School Board is getting an early jump on hiring.

Superintendent of education for the Catholic board, Ed DeDecker, says right now, they’re on the hunt for French and occasional teachers.

“We’ve been, like other boards, struggling for a little while, trying to find French teachers. French teachers are a valuable commodity in the province, and boards are actively trying to hire those who have French teaching qualifications,” he said. “We’re pulling permanent teachers off those supply lists … we need to hire approximately 300 more people to our supply list to bring that up to a level that meets the needs in the system.”

Asked why an industry that for so long had very few available jobs could soon be in high demand, DeDecker said there are a couple of reasons.

“We started to notice a little bit of a recovery [in enrollment] two years ago, and a little bit more last year, and this year fairly significantly, so that’s obviously one factor. We [also] have an aging teaching population, and those people are starting to get to the point where they’re considering retirement, so not only do we see a need right now, but we anticipate in the next two to five years there will be significant need,” he said

DeDecker adds scarcity of teaching jobs is no longer an issue.

“In reality, things are changing but people still have that perception that there are really no jobs in teaching. While it’s not wide open yet, we do anticipate there will be significant jobs for teachers in the next [few years],” he said.
