Cavan Monaghan Township to foot majority of bill for new community centre

The new Cavan Monaghan Community Centre won’t be a financial burden to taxpayers in the township, according to Mayor Scott McFadden.

Design plans for the $15-million facility were unveiled in Millbrook on Tuesday at a public forum. Cavan Monaghan Township McFadden says all but $1 million is coming from the township’s reserve fund, in large part due to provincial gambling revenue from the Shoreline Slots at Kawartha Downs in nearby Fraserville.

The rest of the money will be raised privately with fundraisers, he said.

“People’s taxes will not be going up as a result of the construction of our new community centre and that’s very important,” said McFadden.

The community centre will boast an NHL-size rink, running track, banquet hall and a fitness facility. Ten acres have been set aside as construction will begin in the spring next to the municipal office on County Road 10 in Millbrook, about 30 kilometres south of Peterborough.

“The land it will be sitting on was sold to the township by a developer for $1,” said McFadden.

Future expansion could include another ice pad, swimming pool and a splash pad.

The new community centre is scheduled to open in August 2019.
