Vehicle heavily damaged after colliding with deer in West Kelowna

Two people were taken to Kelowna General Hospital late Monday night after the Range Rover they were in collided with a deer.

“It was a pretty big buck,” RCMP Const. Dave Gauthier said.

The single vehicle crash happened on Highway 97 between Horizon Drive and Ross Road.

Police told Global News on scene that the vehicle was in the slow lane when the deer suddenly jumped onto the road.

“It doesn’t look like they would have any indication that it was running up because there is an embankment on the side coming from the lower road here, so they would not have any chance to stop,” Const. Gauthier said.

The Range Rover sustained significant damage in the crash.  Police said it’s lucky the animal didn’t go through the front windshield.

“Yeah very lucky,” Const. Gauthier said. “The vehicle is an SUV, so it is a little higher up so the front end took the brunt of the hit.”

Police said the two occupants didn’t appear to be seriously hurt.
