A team of eight investigators with Quebec’s Bureau of independent investigations (BEI) was dispatched to Lévis on Sunday morning after police shot a machete-wielding man.
According to the BEI, preliminary reports indicate police were called to Lévis’ Saint-Romuald district at 3:22 a.m. Sunday to reports of a seemingly troubled man.
When officers arrived, they found a 27-year-old man, who was holding a machete, the BEI said.

Police ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he refused to comply.
He instead, allegedly moved towards the officers brandishing the machete menacingly.
That is when officers opened fire and the man was hit with at least one bullet.

He was rushed to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The BEI now has to determine whether those reports are accurate.
As per protocol, the BEI investigates whenever a civilian is injured or killed during a police intervention.
Lévis is located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River across from Québec City.
