The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are the hottest team in the CFL’s East Division.

Hamilton scored early and often and held on to beat the Ottawa Redblacks 26-22 at TD Place Stadium in the nation’s capital Saturday night.

C.J. Gable had his best game of 2017 with two touchdown runs of one and two yards and recorded 74 rushing yards on 11 carries, both season high numbers.

Gable, who was benched earlier this season, also made three receptions for 28 yards as the 2-8 Ticats won their second straight game after starting the year with eight consecutive losses.

Hamilton’s Jeremiah Masoli also won his second start in a row, going 17-for-31 for 231 yards and had 7 carries for 73 yards.

The defending Grey Cup champion Redblacks fell to 4-7-1 with the loss but still remain the top team in the East with nine points.

But they lost starting quarterback Trevor Harris to a right shoulder injury midway through the third quarter when he was drilled into the ground by Hamilton defensive tackle Davon Coleman.

Harris went 18-of-28 for 193 yards and tossed a 22 yard TD to receiver Diontae Spencer. Drew Tate replaced Harris and completed seven of his 12 pass attempts for 108 yards. Tate threw a 28 yard major to Josh Stangby to pull Ottawa to within five points of Hamilton, 26-21, at the start of the fourth quarter.

But the Redblacks had just one more scoring opportunity, a 44 yard field goal attempt that kicker Brett Maher booted wide lift for a single. Maher went 2-for-4 on the night, converting field goals from 38 and 43 yards. He also missed a 25 yarder in the second quarter that resulted in a single.

Hamilton’s Sergio Castillo, on the other hand, was a perfect 4-for-4 with field goals of 10, 15, 23, and 38 yards.
