At least two of the Edmonton Eskimos fans at Saturday’s Labour Day rematch at The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium will be there on their honeymoon.

Wes and Kelly Goddard of Edmonton got married on Monday, right before the Labour Day Classic game between Edmonton and the Calgary Stampeders. But instead of wearing traditional wedding garb, they were decked out in their Eskimos jerseys.

Wes told 630 CHED’s Ryan Jespersen they met during the Labour Day Classic four years ago.

“We both wanted to watch the football game. We were alone and went to our local Boston Pizza and just met during the game.”

They stayed at the restaurant talking until after 10:30 that night, getting to know one another.

The Labour Day Classic became a key in their relationship and became a tradition after that.

“Every Labour Day, we’d go down to Calgary and watch the game.”

Then last year, they kicked things up a notch and got engaged during the Labour Day Classic.

“When we were trying to decide how best to have the ceremony, we decided to just keep with the Labour Day theme,” Wes said.

Kelly told Jespersen listeners she had never dreamed about getting married in a football jersey, but that it was just great.

They had a mix of Eskimos and Stampeders fans at the wedding, so at least some of the attendees were happy with the game results.

The Goddards will be cheering on the Green and Gold during Saturday’s rematch game in Edmonton.

“We’ve got season tickets,” Kelly said.
