The TTC is making a push for greater safety on its vehicles and at its stations by launched a new app and campaign to help riders report incidents of harassment more easily.
SafeTTC is a free app that’s available on iPhone and Android mobile devices and allows riders to document incidents through photos and descriptions while they are using the transit system and report the incidents to transit control.
The app will work in all subway stations through Wi-Fi.
“What we want is one more tool where instead of someone having to reach for the yellow strip or get up to the surface to make a phone call, they can track something that’s making them uncomfortable more quickly and it bring it to the attention of transit control,” said TTC Chair Josh Colle.
“[Transit Control] will determine if it’s a legitimate concern and our experts will pursue it as need be.”
In addition to the SafeTTC app, the TTC is also launching the “This is where…” campaign that sheds light on the various forms of harassment that have occurred on the TTC.
“Our campaign confronts different kinds of harassment using real life customer encounters including sexual harassment and harassment based on identity, ability and race,” said TTC Chief Customer Officer Kirsten Watson.
“Unfortunately, harassment in public places – including public transit – is far too common. It is our belief that identifying and acknowledging and owning the problem is the first step to stop it.”

The TTC said in 2015, there were 67 incidents of sexual assaults reported to transit enforcement officers. In 2016 that increased to 85 incidents. Between Jan. 1 and July 31, there were 55 incidents of sexual assault reported.
“What we are doing is using a tool that’s in everybody’s hand in the subway and use that as a tool that makes them feel safer,” said Colle.
