A group of neighbours in Houston formed a human chain to help a pregnant woman in labour reach a dump truck through the floodwaters created by Hurricane Harvey.
Greg and Andrea Smith, who are both doctors, were excited about the arrival of their first child.

“We had two miscarriages before this,” Greg told People Magazine. “We’ve always wanted a little baby.”

All of the Houston emergency hotlines were full and the couple was unable to issue a plea for assistance.

Greg was about to take his wife to the second floor for help when someone sent out an email to his neighbours in their apartment complex in search of OBGYNs and nurses.
Before he could move his wife, people filed in from the complex to offer assistance.

Unbeknownst to the Smiths, someone was able to reach out to a family friend who lived near a fire station and place a call for help.

Over an hour later, as the couple was preparing for a home birth, a dump truck was passing by and a neighbour flagged it down.
The Smiths’ neighbours formed a human chain, passing Andrea through the waist-high water until she reached the safety of the truck.

“We were soaked,” Greg said. “We sat on top of all these fire hoses, while firemen drove us to the hospital. They were careful to go slow and keep us safe.”
The couple’s baby, Adrielle, was born at 1:59 a.m. on Monday.
