There is a new face on council in Ward 5 after Sarah Hamilton won the race in west Edmonton, according to unofficial results Monday night.
Global News declared Hamilton the winner in Ward 5 with 13 of 19 polls reporting.
Earlier this year, Councillor Michael Oshry – who served one term on council – announced he would not be seeking re-election.
Here’s a quick look at the candidates running in Ward 5.
Philip Asher

Nafisa Bowen
Nafisa Bowen has worked as a fundraiser in the not-for-profit sector for more than 10 years, currently working with the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Sarah Hamilton
Sarah Hamilton has worked with both the municipal and provincial governments. She currently owns and operates SPARROW Communications & Public Relations. He platform includes ensuring infrastructure projects are completed on time and on budget, advocating for the river valley and creating more amenities in Ward 5.

Miranda Jimmy
Miranda Jimmy, a former city employee, is currently the program manager with the Edmonton Heritage Council. Her goal is to ensure all Edmontonians feel connected to their community, have their voices heard and are able to live, work and play in the city.

Brian Kendrick
Brian Kendrick believes his experience in construction, building and infrastructure could serve him well on council. He wants to see underutilized areas of the river valley more accessible for the public. His priorities include serving the needs of seniors, helping reduce the homeless population and job creation.

Dawn Newton
Dawn Newton is a senior manager with Telus and worked with the City of Edmonton to help increase the telecommunications company’s internet infrastructure in the city. She said her leadership and thoughtful decision-making will help build a brighter future for families and businesses in Edmonton.

Svetlana Pavlenko
Svetlana Pavlenko is a former Top 40 Under 40 alumni and has been the executive director of the Jewish Senior Citizen’s Centre for more than seven years. Her priorities include providing more support for working parents, building safe and inclusive communities and revamping infrastructure, parks and recreation.

James Prentice
James Prentice manages social development contracts for the Alberta government. He wants to make Edmonton the best place to live and work in the world. His priorities include working better with business and industry members, improving roads and the city’s transit system and spending tax dollar wisely.
David Xiao
No stranger to politics, David Xiao is running to represent the city in Ward 5. Xiao served as the Conservative MLA for Edmonton-McClung from March 2008 until his defeat in the May 2015 election. He said he wants to ensure Edmonton has a socially compassionate and fiscally disciplined municipal government.

In total, 13 people are running for mayor and there are 70 candidates for city council. Twenty people are running to become Edmonton Catholic School Board trustees, while 28 people are running to become Edmonton Public School Board trustees (including one acclamation).
Election day is Monday, Oct. 16.
