Service Nova Scotia seizes 7K illegal cigarettes, 2 men face charges

Following a two-month investigation, two men have been arrested after 7,000 illegal cigarettes were seized.

The pair, aged 50 and 54, now face charges under the Nova Scotia Revenue Act.

According to a press release on Wednesday, Halifax police assisted Service Nova Scotia in seizing a vessel along with the tobacco.

The tobacco had a value of $1,926 in provincial taxes and $1,470 in federal taxes.

According to the press release, the use of illegal cigarettes in the province has slowed considerably since 2006 when 30 per cent of all tobacco came from illicit sources.

It’s now down to 10 per cent.

The two men will appear in Halifax provincial court this November.
