What’s open and closed on Canada Day in Toronto

A weekend full of special events and Canada 150 celebrations awaits. Here’s how all the Canada Day festivities will affect roads and transit in Toronto, plus a list of what’s open and what’s closed on Saturday and Monday.

What’s open

  • Restaurants and bars, small retail stores, gas stations and a few other types of businesses in Toronto are allowed to stay open on holidays if they choose. Retail businesses in tourist areas of downtown, such as Yorkville, downtown Yonge, Queen’s Quay West and the Distillery District, are also allowed to stay open.
  • The CF Toronto Eaton Centre (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Square One (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Vaughan Mills (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.), Toronto Premium Outlets (9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.) and Pacific Mall are open on Canada Day.
  • Tourist attractions such as the Toronto Zoo, Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, the Ontario Science Centre and the Hockey Hall of Fame are open.
  • Major movie theatres will remain open.
  • Public tennis courts, outdoor swimming pools and splash pads, city golf courses.
  • Many municipal museums/historic sites (Colborne Lodge, Fort York, Mackenzie House, Market Gallery, Montgomery’s Inn, Scarborough Museum, Spadina Museum).

What’s closed

  • Most grocery stores, the LCBO and Beer Store locations are closed Saturday.
  • Federal, provincial and municipal offices are closed on Monday
  • Toronto Islands Park remains closed due to flooding.
  • Mail collection and delivery is cancelled for Monday.
  • Toronto Public Library branches are closed Saturday, open Monday.

Roads and transit

  • Nearly a dozen TTC routes will be diverted due to road closures related to Canada Day celebrations.
  • GO Transit is running on a Saturday schedule for the holiday Monday.
  • Road closures related to the Canada Days festival at Nathan Phillips Square start on June 30 at 4 p.m. through July 3 until 1 a.m. each night. Bay Street will be closed between Dundas and Richmond, Queen Street between Yonge Street to University Avenue and Elizabeth, Hagerman and Albert Streets will also be closed.
  • For Canada Days at Scarborough Civic Centre, Borough Drive between Borough Approach East and Borough Approach West will be closed from June 29 at 8 a.m. to July 2 at 8 a.m.
  • For the Canada Day Parade in Scarborough, Brimley Road will be closed from Progress Avenue to Ellesmere Road from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and from Ellesmere Road to Lawrence Avenue from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Ellesmere Road will be closed (Midland Avenue to McCowan Road) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Canada Days at Mel Lastman Square will mean lane closures on Yonge Street starting at 8 a.m. on July 1. The southbound lanes between Park Home Avenue and North York Boulevard will be closed until 1 a.m. Closures for the northbound lanes between Elmwood Avenue and Empress Avenue start at noon and will be in effect until 1 a.m.
  •  Humber Bay Park Road West is closed on July 1 from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.
  • From College Street to Bloor Street, Queen’s Park/Queen’s Park Circle will be closed on from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
  • For East York Canada Day, several streets will be closed from 7 a.m. to midnight: Cosburn Avenue (Cedarvale Avenue to Oak Park Road) and Virginia Avenue (Cedarvale Avenue to Cosburn Avenue) and Gledhill Avenue (Holborne Avenue to Cosburn Avenue).
  • In Mississauga, there will be road closures Saturday due to festivities in Celebration Square. From 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. the following streets will be closed: Duke of York Boulevard from Burnhamthorpe Road West to Prince of Wales Drive, City Centre Drive from Living Arts Drive to Mercer Street, Princess Royal Drive from Living Arts Drive to Duke of York Boulevard.
    That evening, from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., there will be closures on: Living Arts Drive from Burnhamthorpe Road West to Prince of Wales Drive, Burnhamthorpe Road West from Confederation Parkway to Hurontario Street, and Kariya Gate from Burnhamthorpe Road West to City Centre Drive (northbound lanes).
