Surveillance video shows the unidentified driver reversing out of a parking spot, and stopping as a family walks behind her vehicle.

A few seconds later, the vehicle suddenly accelerates, pushing a mother, her three-year-old child and a third person into the middle of the parking lot.

“The victims were actually saying [the driver] was yelling and screaming in the car and pounding her fists on the steering wheel,” said Sgt. Steve Mendez of the Union City Police Department told KPIX.

The mother can be seen grabbing her child and running for safety along with the other victim just before the driver backed up further and fled the scene.

“Thankfully, [the mother] had the presence of mind to reach down and pick up her daughter and move away … had the child been there, it probably would have been hit by the car,” Mendez said.

The victims suffered only minor injuries.
