If you’re looking for leadership advice or any kind of inspiration, attending the Greatness In Leadership conference is a safe bet.
Martin Luther King III kicked off the annual event at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge Tuesday morning.
King’s overall message is one of inclusivity, but he said in today’s climate, achieving that goal is easier said than done.
“We have got to come together as a world community and figure out how to coexist without destroying either person or property,” King said.
“That doesn’t mean that we can’t disagree on issues—we can have a lot of disagreements. But we have to learn to disagree, as my father used to say, without being disagreeable. That’s a hard task.”
King also spent some time talking about having the right mindset.
“If you embrace a philosophy that you are defeated, then you are defeated,” he said.
King set the stage for a star-studded lineup of speakers, which included six-time Stanley Cup champion Mark Messier.
“Figure out what you really want to do,” Messier said. “Once you establish that, work towards being the best you can.”
Several hundred people turned out for the event, including 150 post-secondary students and 350 high school students.
“Wherever you end up, there’s always going to be something you can do to make the world a better place. There’s always going to be some way to be the best at whatever you do,” U of L student Kate Godfrey said, explaining that’s what she took away from the event.
Event organizer Ryan Miller said the event was important for the local community.
“The integration of our future leaders, the high school students, the university and college students…it’s a great day of mentorship and it really gives them an idea what it’s like to go ahead and have careers here in Lethbridge.”
