The test area on the Red River near The Forks measured 15 to 25 inches of ice Saturday morning said Peck. She said that was enough to move forward with opening the trail.

The Assiniboine portion of the skating trail didn’t open, due to open water flowing.

The province released an advisory Saturday afternoon warning everyone to stay off all areas of the Red River in Winnipeg.

They said rising water from the United States is making its way North starting Saturday. The rising levels are expected to possibly weaken and break the ice.

The advisory suggests people be careful when venturing on what appears to be frozen water, because ice levels can vary in different spots.
