EDMONTON – Edmonton’s first baby of 2013 made her debut at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital overnight.
She was born at exactly 2 a.m on New Year’s Day, weighing seven pounds and seven ounces.
Her proud mother Sangeet Kaur Kang, and father Arne Kang, have named their newest addition Saiya Kaur.
“The literal translation is ‘shadow,'” explains the baby’s mom, “but what it really means in Punjabi, which is the language it comes from, is somebody who’s always going to be with you.”
Saiya was supposed to arrive until January 2nd, but her parents had a feeling she would come early.
“I thought it would be cool to have a New Year’s baby,” her dad says.
Still, neither he nor his wife thought it would actually happen. The two were originally planning on spending New Year’s Eve playing games with friends, but first stopped for what’s believed to be a common labour-inducing food.
“We decided to go eat hot wings to see if we could get her out because I was pretty uncomfortable,” says Sangeet.
Not long after that, the contractions kicked in.
The couple arrived at the hospital around 10 p.m., and four hours later, Sangeet gave birth.
Sangeet says she’s excited about having a daughter, who also has a two year-old brother named Nishaan. But the two kids will likely be the couple’s last.
“Maybe a couple more,” jokes Arne.
“No, I don’t think so,” Sangeet replies with a laugh. “We’re done.”
Both mom and baby are doing excellent.
The first baby born at the Royal Alex was at 4:11 a.m., and the first baby born at the Misericordia Community Hospital was at 6:38 a.m.
The Grey Nuns hospital sees more deliveries than any other Edmonton hospital, with about 6,000 births taking place there in 2012.
