Calgary students stuck inside amid cold winter weather

Calgary students could be stuck inside during recess and lunch breaks this week thanks to the bitter cold.

Both the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) have policies in place for cold weather.

The CBE recommends keeping students inside when temperatures reach -20 C or more (including wind chill.) According to the CBE’s website, the policy is “comparable to other school jurisdictions in Alberta and across Canada.”

The CCSD, meanwhile, keeps children indoors when the temperature drops below -18 C (including wind chill.)

The policies mean that as the temperature drops this week, thousands of students could be kept indoors.

Daytime highs this week are expected to sit anywhere from -15 to -24 C, not including wind chill.

Although students may be kept indoors during their lunch break, many will still be walking to and from school – or walking to catch a bus.

The CBE’s current guidelines stipulate that bus stops be located within 1.6 kilometres from the homes of elementary students, and within 1.8 kilometres for middle school/junior high students,
