RCMP say it’s not yet known if a suspicious package found in Red Deer on Monday contained a bomb.
The package was brought in to the downtown RCMP detachment after being discovered by a citizen, prompting officers to close a section of 51 Avenue while they investigated.
The closure, between 46 Street and 47 Street, lasted for about five hours.
During that time, the Red Deer RCMP’s Explosive Device Unit was brought in to examine the package and the building was evacuated – expect for essential staff.
In addition, RCMP members canvassed neighbouring businesses that were open to advise them of what was happening.
A Tuesday news release indicated officers “neutralized the device” shortly after 10 pm., but hadn’t yet determined whether or not “the device was explosive.”
