Leonard Cohen honoured with official book of condolences, tribute concert

The passing of Leonard Cohen, one of Canada’s greatest musical icons, sent shockwaves across the nation Thursday, with thousands taking to social media to express their grief and share their memories.

In Montreal, where the singer-songwriter was born, a makeshift memorial quickly materialized in front of his former Plateau home on Vallières Street. Fans left flowers and lit candles while others joined in an impromptu sing-along.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre announced Saturday afternoon that a tribute concert would be held in Montreal in the following weeks to honour the late Leonard Cohen. The details of the concert have yet to be released.

Many in the city couldn’t wait that long and gathered at Parc du Portugal across from Cohen’s home to remember the icon through his music.

Montrealers wishing to express their grief can also bring pen to paper at the Grande Bibliothèque de Montréal where a condolence book has been made available to the public.

Those wishing to write a message of condolence to the family can do so Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the library hall at 475, De Maisonneuve Boulevard East.

An official registry has also been made available online for those unable to sign the memorial book in person.

Leonard Cohen died Monday at the age of 82. He was remembered in a traditional Jewish memorial service held Thursday in Montreal, with son Adam Cohen posting a touching tribute to celebrate his late father.
