The City of Edmonton has installed three raised crosswalks along Buena Vista Road in the Laurier Heights neighbourhood in hopes of slowing down traffic.

“There was speeding and stunting on the roadway and it was felt that raised crosswalks was the way to go to address those concerns,” Maida Zederayko, a senior engineer with the City of Edmonton’s Urban Transportation department, said.

The raised crosswalks were constructed at 85 Avenue, 81 Avenue and near the end of Buena Vista Road. The crosswalks bring the pavement up to the same level as the sidewalk and feature a wider top than the speed humps in some Edmonton neighbourhoods.

The crosswalks are permanent. The goal is to slow down traffic and make pedestrians more visible.

“We are measuring the traffic speeds and volumes and looking for those behaviour changes and also for increased pedestrian safety,” Zederayko said.

This is the first time the city has used raised crosswalks on a main road. Next year, the city will install raised crosswalks along Saskatchewan Drive between 64 Avenue and 74 Avenue.
