This year marks Shield of Athena‘s 25th anniversary.
The organization houses over 100 women and children who have been exposed to domestic violence, as well as raising public awareness on the issue of family violence.

“If you are a victim, you have to get out of the situation,” said Melpa Kamateros, Shield of Athena director.
“Don’t be scared.”
Sixteen languages are spoken by social workers and support staff in their efforts to guide women and their families to safety.

The organization is planning to add a second-step resource to help women move on after their stay at the shelter.
“After, they need a place to transition to, to learn a trade, to get out of the welfare circle so that they can be autonomous,” Kamateros said.
