MONTREAL – The Shield of Athena Family Services hosted its annual art auction at the Maison Ogilvy Sunday afternoon.
In its 21st edition, the auction has become a signature event for the organization, raising funds for victims of family violence, primarily women and children.
Some 30 artists, from diverse walks of life, donated works of art for the event, which not only raises funds but also awareness about the issues faced by survivors of domestic violence.
Event patron Nadia Saputo said that’s one of the reasons she supports the cause.
“Abuse in the home exists and we rarely hear about it, so I feel like it’s something that I need to do,” she said.
Earlier in the year, Global Montreal collaborated with the Shield of Athena to launch a public service announcement to put an end to domestic violence. The PSA titled “Never Ever” was unveiled in February at the Guzzo Cinema Marche Central and featured prominent Montrealers.
On Sunday, that hard work took on extra meaning, as the men who participated in the production of the “Never Ever” campaign received the Shield’s Recognition Award for contributing to the organization’s mission.
The honorees included former hockey players Chris Nilan and Georges Laraque, Vincent Guzzo of Guzzo Theaters and Global Montreal’s Travis Todd.
