Every Halloween, Global Edmonton weather specialist Mike Sobel and traffic reporter Daintre Christensen surprise viewers – and staff – with matching costumes.

Daintre says they start brainstorming ideas around the first week of October, and come up with two or three options before making the final selection.

“We always say that next year we’re going to pick our costumes weeks in advance, but when it comes right down to it, we usually decide about a week and half before Halloween,” Mike adds.

“Lately, Daintre and I have made it a custom to go as a team, which seems to work out quite well.”

They follow two rules: Nothing too scary or elaborate: “Don’t want to startle our viewers!” says Daintre.

“We shy away from characters that require a lot of makeup, too. It’s just too time consuming at such an early hour. That goes as well for costumes that require a mask. It’s difficult to be understood if we are talking from behind a mask.”

Daintre says her favourite costumes were 2013’s Sonny and Cher. “It was a fairly simple costume and we had a laugh recreating some of their shtick. I had to stand on an platform to look much taller than Mike!”

Mike’s favourite was 2011’s Invisible Man. “One of the more fun shows was when I wore a green suit and parts of my body would disappear in front of the green wall.”

His craziest costume memory goes back to before Daintre joined the crew, when the morning news was on from 6 to 8 a.m. “I would wear a different costume for each half hour. That gave me very little time to change in between segments so it was run, run, run.”
