Man, 20, charged in fiery north Edmonton fatal crash

A 20-year-old man has been charged with several offences, including impaired driving causing death, in connection with a fatal collision in north Edmonton earlier this week.

A middle-aged woman, whose identity has not been released, was killed in a fiery crash in the area of 97 Street and 160 Avenue Monday afternoon.

Police said a blue Nissan Xterra was heading north on 97 Street when it was struck from behind by a white Infiniti G37. The Nissan caught fire and both vehicles veered into the ditch.

The woman driving the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driving the Infiniti was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Thursday, police said Eric Lestar had been charged with the following offences:

  • Impaired driving causing death
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death
  • Refusal to comply with a blood demand

The woman’s death was Edmonton’s 23rd traffic fatality of 2016.
