WATCH ABOVE: A middle-aged woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Edmonton's north side Monday afternoon. As Sarah Kraus reports, police say charges are pending against the other driver involved in the crash – Oct 25, 2016

Police said charges are pending against the driver of a car in connection with a deadly crash in north Edmonton Monday afternoon.

Officers were called to the scene near 97 Street and 160 Avenue at around 4:30 p.m.

Police said witnesses told them an SUV was headed north on 97 Street when it was hit from behind by a car. The SUV caught fire and both vehicles veered into a ditch east of the intersection.

They said the driver of the SUV, a middle-aged woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We saw that blue car, that’s right there in ditch, it got hit by the white car that’s in the ditch, rear-ended,” Nadine Bouchard, who witnessed the crash, said. “The car flew in the air, the blue one, and it caught on fire and blew up.”
