Two men were arrested late Friday and early Saturday.
The first, a man in his 20s, was released with a promise to appear in court at a later date. The second suspect, a 19-year-old man, is being detained and is expected to appear in court via video-conference Saturday to face charges of breaking and entering.
The events reportedly took place on the nights of Oct. 14 and 15. Quebec City police are investigating 15 complaints of breaking and entering and four of sexual assault.
Police said the sexual assault files will be handed over to the Crown Prosecutor for evaluation.
Denis Brière, Laval University’s rector applauded the arrests.
“It’s excellent news,” he said. “First and foremost for the victims, then for our female residents, and finally for the university community at large.”
In a written statement Brière said the university reiterated its support for the victims and lauded their courage in speaking out and filing formal complaints.

He also said the arrests were not an end to the story.

“We are witnessing the beginning of a wider movement, where different players in society have come together to call for an end to sexual violence,” he said.
Briere is referring to a vigil and subsequent demonstrations in support of the victims that were held earlier this week in Quebec City following the assaults.
While security measures on campus have increased, Brière said the university wants to do more.
“We want to part of the exchanges and contribute to the actions to counter all forms of sexual violence,” he said.
