About 40 students were evacuated after a school bus was forced to stop on the northbound side of the Champlain Bridge early Wednesday afternoon.
According to Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Ingrid Asselin, the driver stopped the bus after smoke started pouring out from the engine.

Early reports suggest the smoke was caused by a mechanical malfunction.
Drivers from surrounding cars responded quickly to help get the children safely off the heavily smoking bus.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene as a precaution, but no one was injured.
Another school bus was sent to pick up the students.
Police were unable to confirm to Global News what school the students attend.
