Saskatoon mayoral candidate Kelley Moore pitched a plan Tuesday that she said would prevent cost overruns, like what she called “the colossal failure” of the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan.

Moore said if she is elected mayor, all projects would be subject to an analysis and budget plan before construction.

However, “how the project has been managed is a colossal failure,” Moore said.

Rather than have projects balloon in cost from original estimates, she’d like to implement a so-called ‘financial dashboard.’

The dashboard would allow residents to track fiscal progress of projects. Updates could be provided monthly or quarterly, she said.

That way, she said people can track the beginning, middle and end of projects.

Moore also called for responsible growth, stating the city should finish developments under construction before growing any further.

“We have a very serious problem … when we believe that continuing to grow in the way that we are is sustainable financially,” she said.

Voters go to the polls on Oct. 26.
