The suspect in the case is well known to police and has a history of violent offences.
Calgary police are investigating, led by the centralized general investigation unit (CGIS).
Alberta Justice will be called in to find out how this could happen in remand.
The centre houses male and female inmates who are awaiting trial or waiting for transfers to other facilities, parolees whose parole has been suspended or revoked and detainees under the federal Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
Sources say the entire incident was caught on CCTV surveillance video.
The suspect faces a possible charge of attempted murder, which would be upgraded if the victim doesn’t survive.
