American officials have privately confided “concerns” with U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive stance towards Canada, MPs on the House of Commons’ foreign affairs committee were told Monday.
Niall Cronin, the director general of Global Affairs Canada’s North America bureau, told MPs that Canada has a network of diplomats that spend a considerable amount of time arguing Canada’s side of the conflict with American politicians and business leaders.
“What we’ve heard from our network in the United States is broad support for the Canada-U.S. relationship and affection for Canada and understanding of the benefits that a relationship with Canada brings to the United States,” Cronin said.
“We’ve also heard people raise their concerns with some of the steps the (Trump) administration has taken, in private. Few are willing to be more public about it, and that’s their decision.”
“But our network across the United States spends a lot of its time raising awareness about the benefits of the trading relationship, the security partnership and other aspects of the relationship, and has a very receptive audience from a number of sections across the United States,” Cronin added.
During the first Trump administration’s trade war, former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s government presided over a full-court press of premiers, mayors, business leaders and diplomats targeting sub-national politicians and decision makers across the U.S. in the first “Team Canada” push.

The objective was to convince Americans of the value in the Canada-U.S. relationship, in hopes that message would trickle up to — or become pressure against — Trump and his inner circle.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s approach to dealing with Trump’s second administration has been different, or at least less public-relations focused than his predecessor. Trade talks between the two countries collapsed in late August, with Carney saying Trump had demanded terms including control over who Canada could trade with.

Carney and senior Canadian officials have said their side is willing to head back to the negotiating table, but the Trump administration — currently attempting to prosecute a shooting war in Iran and under the shadow of next month’s midterm elections — have not appeared in a rush.
“I don’t know. Canada behaves very badly with the United States, and I don’t know, we’ve caught them in the act,” Trump told reporters on Monday when asked if he would resume trade talks with Canada before the midterms on Nov. 4.
But Cronin noted the Canada-U.S. relationship has endured through disputes in the past, and stressed that, away from the headlines, cooperation between the two countries is still strong.
“I was actually in British Columbia last month, meeting with B.C. officials, they have regular interactions with their counterparts in Alaska and Washington State dealing with all sorts of issues … and those relationships are deep and enduring, and the conversations very, very positive,” Cronin said.
“I think that goes across the board.”

This is for all residents to understand as well,
I personally think that dislike of Justin Trudeau and how our always eastern run federal government because it is ONLY EASTERNERS who get to decide who wins ALL OUR FEDERAL ELECTIONS, runs our government departments BUT his hatred that so many people call it I think has gotten out of control and he has now shifted that hatred to Carney because he is now PM of Canada and is UNWILLING to make changes to certain departments that would make ALL OUR LIVES BETTER, meaning all the government created QUOTA systems that government uses to make money every year off our farmers.
Huge shame on BULLY Trump – treating its neighbor so shamelessly. Canada should stop selling to the Orange Bully!
Warm milk to help the Liberals sleep…
Trump claims to love the Canadian people and then name drops Wayne Gretzky. When did Wayne last live in Canada? Trump also mentioned Wayne’s wife Janet.
Janet is American and from a family that donates generously to Trump and the Republican Party.
Not exactly a great example of Canadians
Uninformed, ignorant canadian voters are a lot of the problem here.
These types of comments “Oh Canada, we will trade with other countries instead and replace evil USA” are so detached from reality and support a government that is bankrupting us.
Fact Check
-> We already trade with other countries and always have tried to trade as much as possible with other countries, this is not something Concarney invented
->economics and supply and demand are what determine the level of trade with other countries, hand shake deals, MOUs and other various other promises do not create trade.
Company A in another country must want something that Company B in Canada has and Company B in Canada must be competitive and provide the best value/cost/product available to company A and then they will buy it and thats called Trade. For instance Germany is not going to buy say steel from canada because Carney visited and gave Ukraine $40BB or agreed to pay taxes to the EU. They have too much steel, its cheaper locally, shipping Canadian steel across the Atlantic ocean then crossing EU to Germany will never be cost effective when they are over producing the same products we are over producing.
-> The reason canada cannot displace US trade is because we share a land boarder which no other country but Mexico shares that advantage. They are the biggest and most desirable trade partner on the planet like it or not and the EU, UK, Asia, Mexico, everyone has eaten crow already and make a deal because this is a plain to see reality. USA spends money and buys, China and India have poor populations that cant afford to spend $130k on diesel trucks and in turn are cheap manufactures looking to sell not buy. Canada is in a unique position to be more competitive then countries across the pacific or Atlantic ocean, throwing away that advantage is ludicrous
-> Canadas trade outside the USA is limited by the enormous shipping costs with crossing the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, then over continents, we are isolated. There is no way to replace the buyer of 80% of our goods and services. EU sometimes is 1% and always under 10% of our trade, we have a trade agreement with them since 2017 already and 11 of 27 states wont sign it like France, the EU doesnt want our goods they want us to buy from them and pay them taxes.
->From a business stance, it makes ZERO SENSE TO STOP TRADING WITH THE USA. This is not clicques in high school, countries are like buisnesses, the goal is to always sell more and expand to more customers, not trade one customer base for another, you add to you base to increase sales. So what sense would not selling to USA get you, like McDonalds saying “Women are too critical of our unhealthy products so we decided going forward McDonalds will no longer serve Women and will ask men to buy twice as much food to replace them because they complain less”. No, thats not how businesses or countries work Concarney is taking you for a ride and you dont even get a share in the $3MM in plane food and drinks. You make the best deal you can with the USA, push for as much trade as possible with the USA, AND look for more trade with other countries where you can
-> Trump is not the only one that complains about canada. Supply management has been a long-standing issue with previous presidents in the USA as well as EU and UK etc. This is why the free trade with EU doesn’t get ratified, no ones interested in giving Canada special treatment, they have their own bottom line to consider.
-> Canada isnt competitive. We have too many taxes, rules, regulations and high min wage. Virtue signaling like carbon taxes increase the cost of our products, regulations that make a $3BB pipeline take 17 years to build and bost $40BB make our products expensive and limit our production and productivity. Countries like Mexico, China, India, Russia essentially anyone outside the EU and UK work faster and cheaper then us and produce more for less and have more competitive products. Thats why the only trade deals or requests for Canadian product is for Oil and Gas, we are not selling cars, steel, or wood outside USA in any real capacity.
All Canadians can do is call Trump names. Real negotiators from serious countries can make deals no matter who the leader of the USA is.
All Canada has to do is drop the massive dairy and poultry tariffs, quit trans-shipments of Chinese goods into the USA, quit dumping lumber into the USA. And make a fair auto manufacturing deal with the USA.
As Canada sits on the sidelines, Mexico is making deals taking the trade deals Canada should have had.
Regime change will fix everything.
We no longer have any ties to the USA thanks to DJT!
We have nothing to worry about!
Carney and liberals will take care of everything like they have done for last 12 years!
If they fail we can always just join European socialist groups
It will be decades before the Trump hatred in Canada returns to normal ‘relations’ with the USA. I doubt we’ll ever travel to the USA again or buy anything US if we can find an alternate product from anywhere else.
Too bad there’s people in America who are afraid of the big orange leprechaun. He is such a waste of a human being. Hopefully the midterms will send him a message for the rise of the cost of living, not only in America but other country’s as well.
@ 9:57 Anonymous – The ‘bigger person’ in this mess is supposed to be the US congress. The duties of congress is section 1 of their constitution. The duties of the president is section 2. Republicans have control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate down there but there is no opposition to the orange dotard because they are beholden to special interests to fund their campaigns.
American democracy has been hijacked by the donor class.
Now they speak up. Bunch of complicit cowards. This IS how they really are. Never trust a Yank. They might sell you a lame horse.
Then maybe they should speak publicly, but they didn’t. Still not buying anything American.
The mindset is still on “ratings” from the apprentice. The need to come up with spectacular events on a daily basis. Be it Canada ,Iran, Cuba, Greenland the show must go on. If you think he left office with a bang in his 1st term, you ain’t seen nothin.
This article means absolutely nothing. Canada still has high tariffs and companies are starting to lay off Canadian workers and until Carney and this Liberal government does something about it our economy is going to get worse. All this feel good stuff supposedly coming out of the US means nothing. Canada calls the USA names then the USA calls us names it’s like children in the playground at school. The facts are no matter what happens in November Trump still has 2 years as president and even then we don’t know what will happen in the USA Canada hasn’t got time to wait and see Canadians don’t get a vote in their elections so our politicians should be swallowing their pride and start working to help Canadians and companies in Canada get rid of the high tariffs. Someone somewhere has to be the bigger person in all this mess
Donald Dotard, America’s current president is a convicted Felon and is being investigated for child rape. Of course, he’ll do anything to deflect from this. He’s an insane, pathological lar and Americans don’t know how to deal with him properly.
Why is the Epstein child diddler even around still?
Seriously.
@Mike:
Hoodwinked again?
Phuck off PP.
@Casey, you’re assuming that our government is telling us the truth. Something tells me that’s not the case, and if there are those willing to speak publicly, why didn’t they name the ones who are? Probably because it’s not the case at all and we’re being hoodwinked again by the this Liberal government.
I am an Idiot !
Pablum for the babies.
Typical cowardly Americans. So concerned, but unwilling to even say so publicly. Spineless.
Lemme guess, their network mostly speaks to Democrats…
When expecting from canada to my place india qslcard and information regarding canada

Most Americans have no problem with what Trump is doing. That’s why his approval rating has tanked below 40%
Most Americans have no problem with what Trump is doing. That’s why his approval rating has tanked below 40%
hahahaha!
Most Americans have no problem with what Trump is doing. Canadians like to believe Americans actually care about Canada.
Meaningless trollop. If the americans oppose what he’s doing vis a vis Canada, they would do something.
Trump gonna pizz in carnholes mouth
cunada is a toilet bowl full of turd, everyone knows that other than liberal carnhole knob gobblers
“I’ll have a deal by July (2025)”
The failed banker
Trump is a waste of air
The relationship between the US and Canada is over. I’m happy that we are moving our trade away from the USA. They have never been trustworthy and I want it to go back to how it was before free trade. They need to bid on our resources like any other country. Anything that we sell to the US is open for bids. I want to trade with our REAL friends and allies in the rest of the world. The relationship with the USA was an abusive one and we will never go back to how it was. It will take a lot of work to free ourselves from the parasites down south but it will be well worth it.
Nov midterms can’t come soon enough!!!
It seems really strange that Mexico can successfully negotiate with this administration and yet Canada cannot. Kind of tells me where the problem lies
Nothing-burger deflection story. Where’s the trade deal, Carnage??
He up ended the US became closer to Putin and Kim. Dictator for life if given a chance. He inherited a strong US and it will be the decline of the US. That’s MAGA ideology for you. Loosers.
Exactly Dexter…. Its the old as time “Hey look over here” trick they always do.
Deflection that Carney still hasn’t got a trade deal.
Global is filling up their mainpage with anti-Trump non-stories because Eby’s campaign is dying.
Who cares about the cowards that won’t open their mouth and speak up against orange man. They can go rot in hell too.
The propaganda machine is at it again.
““What we’ve heard from our network in the United States is broad support for the Canada-U.S. relationship”
It’s just talk. Not only with Canada and the rest of the world but in their own country not one American official has demonstrated any ‘backbone’ when dealing with Trump.
When all is said and done, more will be said than done!
So stop him! If you are so concerned, SHUT HIM THE HELL UP!
Him and his pack of stunted, yelping half breed mongrels at his heels!
