A grand opening was held Tuesday for a new day-treatment program aimed at helping women with addictions and mental health issues.

The CARE (Co-occurring Addiction Recovery Essentials) centre is located in the community of South Calgary at 18 Street and 27 Avenue S.W.

Officials praised people living nearby for helping make it a reality.

“I love you guys being an example of what really building in a community does,” Kent Hehr, MP for Calgary Centre said. “I think it’s important to note that we often get caught up in NIMBY-ism. We hear of an LRT project, or a halfway house, or something like that coming into our communities and we have a visceral reaction to say, ‘No, not next to me.’ I think this is an example of success.”

“We have to understand that it’s our kids or our grandparents or someone else that’s going to benefit from this.”

The women-only program will be run by Recovery Acres. Crews are now finishing renovations on one of the organization’s existing facilities to accommodate the new program.

The centre will be up and running by mid-September.
