Several Edmonton area golfers are being hailed as heroes after they jumped into action to save two small kids when the Jeep they were in rolled into a pond at a golf course west of the city.
The incident happened at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ranch Golf and Country Club in Parkland County.
The general manager of the course said a 10-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl were in the Jeep, which was parked in the parking lot, when it somehow rolled down a hill towards a small pond about 60 metres away.
“It started rolling backwards and the 10-year-old boy actually hopped out of the vehicle,” Murray McCourt explained, adding the boy chased the vehicle down the hill to try to save his sister.
The two-door Jeep reached the pond, which McCourt said is at least three-and-a-half metres deep, and began to submerge. A number of golfers eating lunch at the nearby snack shack saw the vehicle coming down the hill and quickly jumped into action.
“They ran down the hill and jumped in the water and were able to pull the girl out of the vehicle,” McCourt said. “She was strapped into the backseat of the vehicle in her seat belt and the door was locked.”

“They were able to pull her out just as the vehicle fully submerged in this pond… it just all happened so fast.”
McCourt said the kids were not hurt and the family ate at the club restaurant Thursday night. McCourt said it’s incredible no one was injured.
“It was just a miracle situation that everything lined up perfectly. Situations like this don’t always end up with a happy result,” he said.
“The people that did that are absolute heroes.”
The vehicle was pulled out of the pond by Thursday night. It’s not known why the vehicle rolled down the hill. McCourt said the keys were not inside the Jeep at the time.
Police said charges will not be laid.
