The North End Community Health Centre’s roof is in need of repair, but at a cost of up to $100,000, the project isn’t affordable at the moment for the not-for-profit clinic.
“There’s different levels to the roof, but it needs complete work done on all three levels at this point,” said Wayne Tucker, manager of primary care at the centre.
The clinic serves about 5,400 patients in the Halifax area.
The roof has had several leaks over the years and it’s believed the roof’s condition is worsening. Any time the city gets large amounts of rain or snow are cause for concern.
On top of the estimated cost, there is also worry that more problems could be uncovered when and if the roof is opened to be worked on.
“That cost can certainly go up from there,” Tucker said.
According to the Nova Scotia Health Authority, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal is currently reviewing a funding request from the centre for the roof repair.
The roof is considered the most significant problem with the building, but not the only one.
“Probably the wiring as well would have to be looked at, the HVAC system, as well — so I think it’s kind of pretty much everything,” said Tucker, adding that fundraising may have to be considered.
