NEAR WEST KELOWNA – The wildfire worry has ended for people at the Lake Okanagan Resort and two nearby childrens’ camps.

The evacuation alerts issued because of the Cinnabar Creek fire have been lifted.

Fanned by a stiff breeze, the wildfire on the west side of Okanagan Lake grew quickly Wednesday afternoon to about three hectares.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

But under a sustained aerial attack by the BC Wildfire Service it was almost as quickly knocked back and contained.

Numerous retardant drops were made by air tankers while a swarm of skimmer aircraft scooped water from Okanagan Lake to cool the blaze and raise the relative humidity.

On the ground, crews from three municipal fire departments joined Forest Service fire fighters in using hose lines to stop the advance of the flames.

Crews made good progress overnight dousing hot spots and reinforcing hand guards.

With the fire under control, Westside Road was reopened to single-lane, alternating traffic Thursday morning.

The fire started next to the road and is suspected to be human caused.
