Rio 2016: Canada’s Philippe Gagne qualifies for men’s 3m springboard semifinals

RIO DE JANEIRO – Canadian Philippe Gagne qualified for the semifinals in men’s three-metre springboard diving at the Rio Olympics on Monday.

Gagne, of Ville de Mont Royal, Que., placed 12th with a score of 400.75.

China’s Cao Yuan finished first with a score of 498.70. Rommel Pacheco of Mexico placed second with 488.25, followed by American Kristian Ipsen with 461.35.

Gagne, 18, is a first-time Olympian who competed at his first junior national championships in 2007.

He was a three-time medallist at last year’s Pan Am Games in Toronto, winning silver in the 3m and 10m synchro events and bronze in the individual 3m springboard.
