Richard Henry Bain trial: Jury begins deliberations

MONTREAL – Jurors began their work today on deciding the fate of the man accused in a 2012 fatal shooting on election night in Quebec.

Richard Henry Bain is charged with first-degree murder and also faces three counts of attempted murder.

Stagehand Denis Blanchette was shot and killed at a Montreal nightclub where incoming premier Pauline Marois was giving a victory speech to her Parti Québécois supporters.

The jurors received their legal instructions from Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer on Friday.

Bain’s lawyers have argued that their client was mentally ill the night of the shooting, but prosecutors have countered that the shooting was premeditated and triggered by Bain’s anger at the PQ victory.

Prosecutors point to notes he wrote for a psychiatrist evaluating him in November 2012 in which he indicated his plan was to kill as many separatists as possible.
