Cats may be known for always landing on their feet, but one little kitty in Regina was not willing to try.

Daisy, who is assumed to be six months old or younger, was stuck roughly 25 to 30 feet (seven to nine metres) up a tree on the 1100 block of Cameron Street for about three days.

A neighbour initially reported hearing the kitten whimper and contacted the Regina Cat Rescue (RCR). Staff then attempted to find a professional rescue source.

“It’s definitely not something somebody could have done on their own with a ladder,” RCR adoption coordinator Alanna Whipper said.

Police, fire and animal protection services were unable to assist with the rescue.

“Those agencies just don’t have the resources or the mandate to provide those kind of services,” Whipper said.

RCR were able to find Dale’s Tree Service, whose staff used their bucket truck to save the fearful feline just one hour after being contacted.

“[Daisy’s] owner was really worried about her,” Whipper said. “He could see that there were crows circling, just waiting for this little kitten to maybe perish, and he really just didn’t think she was going to get out alive if somebody didn’t do something.”

RCR says Daisy was rescued and back in the arms of her owner Friday morning at approximately 10:30 a.m.

The owner of the kitten was described as being very relieved and his first course of action was to hug Dale and then feed the grey tabby cat.

Whipper said it’s not normal for cats to be stuck in trees specifically, but it is normal for them to climb relatively high.

“A lot of times it’s a lot easier for them to get up than down,” Whipper added.

“What is good is that the community stepped up. It’s a good response from just local people and a local business coming forward to help out.”

Whipper said the incident is a good reminder to the public that cats need to be kept inside or contained while outside.
