A humane society in New Jersey is reminding people to speak up if they see animals in distress after two dogs were found badly burned from tar while on a rooftop.

In a July 23 Facebook post, the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter in Forked River, NJ said they received a call from a bystander who saw a pit bull and a Yorkie in distress on one of the “hottest days of the year.”

“Someone saw them and decided to make a call instead of ignoring the situation,” read the online post. “Animals cannot speak for themselves.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The note went on to say the day before the humane society arrived at the undisclosed location and saw two animals “dancing” around on a tar rooftop in what appeared to be an attempt to protect their feet from the extreme heat and excruciating pain.

“This was a flat, tar roof and with the temperature being 96 degrees, the tar was bubbling, boiling, and burning these helpless dogs,” wrote the humane society. “The Yorkie continuously ran to the edge of the roof to try to find an area that would not burn her further while the pit bull, covered in hot tar, had nearly given up hope.”

According to the shelter, no one was at home during the rescue.

And even though food was provided for the pit bull and Yorkie “there was not a drop of water in sight.”

Both dogs were found dehydrated and severely burned.

The pit bull and Yorkie are said to have been taken to hospital and are recovering.

The humane society said they would update the public on the animals once new information is available.
